Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for January 5, 2012 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.

1. Quick Hits

  • West Virginia routs Clemson in the Orange Bowl 70-33. 70 is the most points ever scored by a team in the history of bowl games.
  • Joe Torre resigns his position with Major League Baseball to pursue an ownership stake in the Dodgers.
  • The Chicago Cubs will pay most of pitcher Carlos Zambrano's salary to unload him to Miami.
  • In college basketball Temple knocked off #5 Duke 78-73.
  • Rangers coach John Tortorella apologized for trashing officials after the Winter Classic. He was fined30,000 anyway.

2. Inspirational

So what was Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons thinking when he was about to kick the winning field goal in overtime at the Sugar Bowl? We'll let him explain it. What? Brunettes? He was told to think about brunettes? What kind of coaching is that? Blondes and redheads must be really pissed.

3. Name Game Continued

Yesterday I wrote: The New Jersey Nets set an NBA record by having four guys with the same last name on their roster: Deron, Shawne, Shelden and Jordan Williams. The story was not reported by Brian Williams. Robin Williams didn't think it was funny. "I could write a book" said Tennessee Williams.

You guys couldn't leave well enough alone?

*D.Q. wrote "I could write a song," said Bernie Williams.

*A.V. And Andy Williams did not sing the Anthem.

*D.L. on Facebook at "Len Berman's Top 5," They just signed Buck Williams.

*D.M. Where's Jayson Williams when you need him?

*S.T. The perfect sponsor for inside the paint......Sherwin-Williams!

*And from M.B. Ted Williams was also on the Nets for a while. But the other players "froze him out". (Yes, I know, that's cold!!!)

4. God Bless America

One of sports' coolest traditions is Kate Smith singing "God Bless America" at Flyers hockey games. And even though Kate is no longer with us, her voice lives on. From time to time the Flyers turn the song into a terrific duet. Such was the case during the Winter Classic weekend when Lauren Hart performed. (Thanks to subscriber Brian G. for the tip.) Lauren is the daughter of the late great Flyers announcer Gene Hart. Enjoy.

5. My Hero

One of my least favorite aspects of sportscasting? You're doing a live report and yahoos are jumping around you on camera. So two cheers to Pakistani reporter Asad Sahi. The poor guy had to do his live-shot New Year's Eve. Check out the :48 mark. The closest I ever came to losing it was during the World Series at Shea. I had to push a guy out of the camera shot. He actually apologized to me afterwards. Just one of the many reasons why I'm partial to the plight of Mets fans.

Happy Birthday: One of my all time faves, former St. John's coach Lou Carnesecca. 87.
Bonus Birthday: Annie Hall herself, actress Diane Keaton. 66.

Today in Sports: Red Sox owner Harry Frazee defends selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees calling Ruth "one of the most selfish and inconsiderate men ever to put on a baseball uniform."
Bonus Event: Elvis records "Heartbreak Hotel." 1956.
