President Donald Trump insists he was right to fire FBI Director James Comey because he “was not doing a good job.”
Trump made his first public comment on Comey’s ouster on Wednesday in the Oval Office while meeting with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who served under former President Richard Nixon.
Some Democrats claimed the sudden decision to oust Comey, who was investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, smacked of the Watergate scandal.
“This is Nixonian,” Sen. Bob Casey (D-Penn.) said Wednesday. “Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein must immediately appoint a special prosecutor to continue the Trump/Russia investigation.”
Earlier Wednesday, Trump met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office. Kislyak, of course, is the person whom former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn spoke to during the transition ― which ultimately led to his ouster earlier this year.
Asked whether the firing of Comey affected his meetings with Russian officials, Trump said, “Not at all.”
Last year, Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions repeatedly praised Comey and the FBI for their handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails.
“Good job, by the FBI,” Trump said in November.
