Donald Trump isn’t the only one who decides to send a tweet in the middle of the night. I considered sending the following two tweets:
From our Peace Corp dream to “Fill the World with Love and Hope” to our country’s new Mein Kampf mantra, “America First.”
Slowly kissing off our former partners―Mexico, Japan, Britain, Germany, China, Canada—to carry on the “America First” struggle alone.
I am haunted by the fact that the America which the whole world has admired is now in the hands of a barbarian at the gate. America fought two World Wars to preserve peace and order in the world. We created the Peace Corp to help the people of other nations improve their lives. We wanted to fill the world with love and hope.
Now our universal desire to build a better world has been replaced by “America First” shouts and recitations. It reminds us that we are repeating Nazi-supporter Charles Lindbergh’s isolationist call in the nineteen thirties to make “America First.”
And then Trump’s storm of criticisms against our allies. First a fistfight with Mexico whose government will no longer talk to us. Then telling Japan they will have to pay us protection money. Then alienating China by attacking China’s one-nation policy. Then dismissing NATO as an empty vessel. Then accusing Britain and Germany of helping Obama wiretap Trump’s movements and statements.
How are we going to count on any allies in the future?
Deep cuts are necessary because Trump also wants to cut taxes for the rich. No money is left to repair our sagging infrastructure of roads, bridges, ports, airports.
Now let’s look at Trump’s plan to impoverish our economy. Look at the initial Republican budget proposal. First, pay for building a Mexican Wall 30-feet high at a cost that might reach $40 billion. Then add a $54 billion unneeded increase in the military budget. These two items alone approach a cost of $100 billion. Next, pay for this by cutting out the environmental protection agency (EPA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPBJ), food stamps, Meals on Wheels, after-school programs, family planning, climate change research and other programs. Deep cuts are necessary because Trump also wants to cut taxes for the rich. No money is left to repair our sagging infrastructure of roads, bridges, ports, airports.
The whole plan will kill our culture.
Our health care system under the Ryan plan (or should we call it Trumpcare?) will cause 11 million people to lose their health care insurance. Our public education system will continue to atrophy as people flee it for unqualified charter and religious schools. And nothing is done to lower the cost of attending college.
Our public debt will explode. Prices will rise. Trump voters will experience the carnage – betrayed by yet another fake politician. There will be fewer factory jobs, except for rise of the robots. Attacks on the judiciary and the press will continue. Nothing in this country will resemble America’s past achievements.
Trump’s “Make America Great Again,” like patent medicines of old, will have emptied our purses and ended our hopes. The “terrorist” in the White House is doing what Al-Qaeda could not – destroying our nation without firing a shot.
We are soon to join the rest of the Third World Countries. Another Banana Republic.
