VA Election Results 2013: Terry McAuliffe Defeats Ken Cuccinelli

McAuliffe Defeats Ken Cuccinelli

Republican Ken Cuccinelli lost the Virginia gubernatorial race to Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

McAuliffe was predicted to win the race, with a strong lead in the polls going into Election Day. Cuccinelli's defeat is a blow to Republicans, especially the conservative tea party wing of the party.

According to HuffPost's Mark Blumenthal and Ariel Edwards-Levy, polling indicated the gubernatorial race largely became a referendum on Cuccinelli. Nearly a third of McAuliffe's supporters said they were voting for him because they disliked Cuccinelli, Quinnipiac found.
