Video Shows North Carolina Teacher Comparing Student To A Slave

"Did I call you a n****r?" the teacher is heard saying.

A North Carolina middle school teacher was seen comparing his student to a slave in a Snapchat video last week.

In the video, which was posted to the social network Wednesday, the teacher is shown yelling at a seventh-grader in an Apex Middle School classroom.

The student, who according to CBS News prefers not to be identified, told ABC 11 Eyewitness News that the teacher was upset that he and another student began laughing at a kid who was dancing.

“Did I call you a n*****?” the teacher, whose name is not being released by the school, can be heard saying. “No, I said you are being controlled, by kids. That is exactly what happened to the slaves. They were controlled by their owners, you’re letting him control you and you’re the one who’s getting in trouble.”

Students in the video can be heard laughing as the teacher belittled the 13-year-old. He told ABC 11 that the teacher could have chosen a much more appropriate way to get his point across.

“I didn’t know what to say. He started calling me a slave,” he said. “He could have said it different instead of using that analogy that I was his slave.”

Following the incident, the student’s mom removed her son from the school.

“This was coming from a Caucasian man to an African American student and we’re already in a predominantly white community, a predominantly white school, so for him to use those words, it really hurt my feelings,” Ayona Wilson told CBS’ WNCN-TV.

The incident is being investigated by the Wake County school district, according to a letter from the school that was obtained by the network. The teacher is on paid suspension.
