One Texas man has taken the "I look freakishly like my pet" thing to a whole new level.
Reddit user sydneyowen made internet waves this week when she posted a picture of her “buddy” Todd’s driver's license and debit card. Todd is apparently either a very financially savvy feline or a scruffy Texas redhead who really loves his cat:
Gawker speculated that it was all part of a ruse to test Wells Fargo’s ability to identify species, since Todd and his cat looked so similar. The Consumerist jokingly wondered if Wells Fargo was cool with having cats as customers. The reality is a bit more of the good news-bad news variety.
First, the bad news: This is not an elaborate hoax. Wells Fargo’s explanation was that Todd simply customized his debit card with a picture of a cat, an action “well within our image standards and guidelines on our website,” the bank told The Consumerist.
Now, the good news: That means you can do this too! There’s really nothing new about customizing your credit or debit card (Capital One, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, among others, all offer personalized credit cards). It’s just that Todd chose to use the tiny box many assume to be for identification purposes.
Indeed, one Capital One customer used a mugshot of Nick Nolte on his debit card. Fortunately for him, that also did not mean he was actually Nick Nolte.
Correction: A previous version of this post identified reddit user sydneyowen as a man. She is a woman.
