William Levy danced his way into the hearts of thousands of Americans on “Dancing With The Stars,” but now the Cuban actor is out to win over just one heart in Tyler Perry’s “Single Moms Club.”
As the attractive waiter Manny, the 33-year-old star will be the love interest to single mom Esperanza (Zulay Henao). In an interview with the Efe news service, Levy said he drew from his own personal experience to prepare himself for the role.
Perry’s upcoming dramedy will follow the lives of five single moms (Henao, Amy Smart, Nia Long, Wendi McLendon, Cocoa Brown) who come together thanks to an incident at their children’s school. For Levy, the film hits close to home and touches upon his own childhood memories.
"I grew up with my single mom and never had a dad to look up to,” the Cuban star told Efe. “Fortunately or unfortunately, that taught me some very good things and I learned what my kids need from me."
Levy and his long-time girlfriend actress Elizabeth Gutierrez had their son Christopher in 2006 and daughter Kailey in 2010. While his children have both parents present, the actor said his childhood experience taught him to see life from the perspective of a single mom, someone who “doesn’t have a man to protect her or help her out when she needs it.”
“Single Moms Club” is set to premiere on March 14. In January, the Oprah Winfrey Network ordered a series based on the film that is expected to premiere in the fall.
