Santa isn't just wriggling his way down chimneys to bring Christmas joy this year.
On Wednesday, Melissa York of Fairburn, Ga., assumed the role of Kris Kringle at a local Walmart. She noticed a couple of police officers buying toys to donate to children in need and decided to foot the bill, 11alive.com reports.
The toys were for two children, Kuyler, 6, and Devin, 3, whose mother can't afford to buy gifts this year. The Fairburn Police Department got together to launch a donation drive to make sure the boys get their monster trucks and Spiderman toys.
But the policemen didn't even have to use the funds they collected.
"[York] reached over and swiped her card. She said "'This is on me!'" Captain Randy Mundy wrote the department's Facebook page. "She told Toney and I to take the money we had collected and buy more toys. I was speechless."
York isn’t the only one spreading the Christmas spirit at department stores.
In Michigan, an anonymous donor wrote a $10,000 check to Walmart that helped cover 43 customers’ bills, 24 Hour News 8 reported. At a Texas Walmart, 22 layaway accounts -- amounting to more than $2,000 -- were paid off by a secret Santa, according to News West 9. And in Pennsylvania, a mother was told a “Christmas angel” paid her $450 Kmart bill, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia.
For the Mundy, the generous gesture gave him hope.
"Melissa, wherever you are tonight," Mundy wrote, "on behalf of the guys and gals at the police department, and the two little boys you helped today, THANK YOU for what you did and for caring!"
