Woman Stabbed In Face Near Holy Name Cathedral Sunday

Witnesses say a homeless woman was panhandling near a church on Chicago's Near North Side early Sunday evening when a man she asked for money stuck a knife in her face and abdomen.

The 41-year-old woman is in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after a 66-year-old man allegedly stabbed her with a hunting knife, WLS reports. The incident took place after a verbal argument around 5:37 p.m. Sunday near Holy Name Cathedral.

“I was just walking past. The next thing I know, I heard her scream, and I turned around and this guy stuck a knife in her side,” witness Gary O’Sullivan, who lives in the neighborhood, told CBS Chicago. “That’s when I decided to stage-left exit.”

Police did not disclose the nature of the quarrel, but told the Chicago Tribune it escalated before the woman was attacked. The suspect fled the scene, but was apprehended by police a short time later. No charges have been filed as of Monday morning.
