While Chicago native Dan Pritzker was working on a film about pioneering jazz trumpeter Buddy Bolden, he took his mother to see Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights." He was so struck by the film that he decided he'd add a second project, a silent film of his own that followed the heritage of jazz where "Bolden!" would leave off.
Thus, "Louis" was born: a silent film, washed-out though not black-and-white, depicting the largely fictionalized childhood of Louis Armstrong.

The world premiere of "Louis" will take place this Wednesday night at the Symphony Center. What will make the night truly special is that the accompanying music will be performed by Wynton Marsalis and a ten-piece jazz band.
Marsalis composed much of the music himself; the nine-time Grammy winner will also lead the band in compositions by jazz legends like Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton. Pianist Cecile Licad will bring a classical flavor to the night, playing selections from Brahms, Chopin and others to add to the film's soundtrack.
