Zenit St. Petersburg Fans Set Fire To Lokomotiv Stadium After Win Over FK Volga

Russian Soccer Fans Celebrate Win By Setting Fire To Stadium

We'll never understand fans rioting after a win, but it seems to be an unfortunate trend that continues to plague sports.

The scene at a Russian soccer stadium turned ugly Sunday night, when visiting fans of Zenit St. Petersburg celebrated their victory over FK Volga by setting fire to a cluster of seats in Lokomotiv Stadium. Some fans were smart enough to flee the stands, while others stayed to take photographs and throw objects into the flames. Fire services eventually extinguished the blaze, eliciting cheers from the remaining spectators.

According to ITV, at least 430 seats in the stadium were broken or destroyed. Police in Nizhny Novgorod made 15 arrests after the game.

Unfortunately, arson seems to be the tactic of choice for disgruntled soccer fans. In October, Senegal was disqualified from the 2013 African Cup of Nations after the team's fans set fires in the stands during a qualifying match against the Ivory Coast.

This type of extreme violence knows few bounds, crosses international borders, and has occurred alongside almost every sport. In 2010, possibly one of the largest sports riots ever occurred in Vancouver, Canada following the Canucks Stanley Cup loss. The riot, which lasted into the day following the loss, resulted in widespread damage to downtown Vancouver and over 100 arrests.
