Yesterday we wrote about how the LA Times' Patt Morrison took actress Zooey Deschanel to task for comments that seemed to denigrate Downtown Los Angeles.
In a post on her website, Deschanel fired back with three main points--first, that she was misquoted, second, that she loves LA, and third, that Morrison lacks journalistic integrity. Deschanel's friends and fans have expressed overwhelming support for her.
Glee's Lea Michele tweeted at Deschanel,
@therealzooeyd you seriously rock..read your response letter on @hellogiggles and I must say you are a smart, witty, and awesome lady.
The Office's Mindy Kaling wrote,
@therealzooeyd you my friend, were the victim of a lazy person on a slow news day. LAME!
Deschanel herself expressed solidarity with Jonah Hill, of Superbad fame. Since Hill had been misquoted by EW at the same event, Deschanel tweeted,
@jonahhill You're not the only one! Half the stuff I said last night was taken completely out of context.
After this outpouring of publicity, Morrison has responded, albeit somewhat indirectly, to the actress' complaints.
In Morrison's new piece, Deschanel is no longer a snobby cow, but a "talented and charming actress." Despite this 180, Morrison never once writes the words, "I'm sorry" or "I apologize." The journalist defends her previous comments, explaining that a check of voter registration records placed Deschanel in the Pacific Palisades, as if the claim that she lives on the West Side explains everything. The final line of her article offers a weak attempt at friendliness:
I hope Deschanel will head back to greater downtown L.A. one of these days. The vegetarian breakfasts at the Homegirl Cafe? I can't recommend them enough.
