Technically, summer begins June 21 with the solstice but, "who's waiting?" As far as I'm concerned, summer is here and now and is there any doubt? The ponytail is here to stay.

The ponytail, with a variety of intermingled braids, high and low parts, gathered taught and glossy or loose and wispy, low near the nape, the ponytail has become the ubiquitous do this summer. It made a strong appearance on the runways predicting summer styles and, indeed, it is one of the great survivors of the season.

This is one of the eternal dos. It is an intuitive, obvious creation that always has been and always will be, probably due to its certain practicality. There's just nothing like it for conveniently getting long hair or a bob neatly out of the way. But this year has been different. The ponytail is here on it's on, not just as a fast, efficient trick for momentarily managing another do at the gym.

When we're outside and active, the ponytail screams "healthy." On a casual outing or evening, the accent can be on "playful," or romantic if you gather the hair loosely with some youthful wisps around the face. At work, though, a ponytail can be all business, combed in a uniform, glossy tail, maybe with a sharp, perfect part. Give it a contemporary dimension by setting the part low.

Maybe you've already got a tight, thin braid. That will blend beautifully in a ponytail. Add a strand of gold or colored ribbon to the braid to add glam or summer drama.

Speaking of blending summer trends, the ponytail is the perfect pairing for a crop top that's sweeping red carpets this spring. Worth noting, those wearing the crop tops fare best with a skirt, shorts or pants that cover the belly button. This new look isn't about low slung faded jeans riding on bony hips. This is for a high, romantic waistline... you can do this! It doesn't look trashy or loose at all. It shows beautiful skin, and just enough. This goes beautiful with the nape of your neck exposed beneath a playful, equally romantic ponytail.

In reference to another hot style, the tightly undone-unkempt look is so easily managed by pulling it back into a ponytail for a mid-day change of look but, remember, your hair doesn't have to be in the way to warrant a ponytail. Do it for its own sake.

To avoid the ponytail headache (pulled too tight), get the look you want then gently shift it side-to-side while holding the tie, loosening the hair just 'a hair.'

Look for some of the cool new clasps, clips and holders for ponytails, some incorporating leather and jewelry.

As always, be open to change!
