I started finding success when I discovered this harsh realization: The world doesn't give a shit about you.
It doesn't care what you think or how you're feeling today. It won't lose sleep over whether you fail or succeed.
It's not about you.
Most people are either oblivious to this fact or choose to ignore it. The evidence is all around us. The first thing people want to talk about is themselves. I is much more commonly used than You.
There are millions of people out there that want to be the next big fashion designer, filmmaker, or author. It's hard to stand out on ambition alone -- you're not the only one who dreams of success.
But you have a superpower you can wield whenever you choose: Put other people's interests first.
Too many businesses, even artists, view people as a means to an end -- a vehicle that can help them reach fame or fortune. Their selfishness is easily detected.
In a world where everyone is screaming to get noticed, stand out by listening to what people want or need. Connect with the people around you by showing them you care.
Then, and only then, will people start to care about you. But by then that won't matter as much, because you'll have discovered that the real joy all along was creating something of value to the world.
