FBI Director James Comey has sent a letter to Congress that could upend the 2016 presidential campaign. In his letter to Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), chairman of the House Government Oversight Committee, Comey stated that the FBI is investigating additional emails that "appear to be pertinent" to the probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server that were found during an unrelated investigation. FBI officials later confirmed it was due to the seizing of devices during the investigation into the illicit texts sent by former Congressman Anthony Weiner that thousands of emails from Clinton's servers were found. Weiner is married but separated from long-time Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
While this is clearly an unwanted October surprise for the Clinton camp, sources close to the investigation concede that no smoking gun has emerged yet. One said that emails were found on a device in the Weiner/Abedin home to which Weiner had access. The emails that have thus far been reviewed were classified by one agency but not all. He confirmed that the FBI is planning to question Weiner about the emails as soon as possible.
