Tall, dark, handsome... and debt-free?

The modern dater includes fiscal responsibility in his or her list of criteria -- and women are especially picky.

According to a CreditCards.com survey, 55% of women (versus 37% of men) would cut off a relationship if they found out their partner was heavily in debt. 70% of women (versus just 54% of men) think secret credit card debt is a reason to break up.

And worst of all, if a partner had lied about his or her ability to pay routine bills, 70% of women would end the relationship. That's the same percentage of women who would dump someone with a criminal history! Meanwhile, only half of men feel the same.

A majority of women also say they would want to know a partner's credit score before getting seriously involved with someone. 57% of women said so, versus 47% of men.

So why do men and women feel so differently? Perhaps it's a holdover from the idea that men should be providers. But in this age, it's important that you and your partner be honest about your finances if you're in a serious relationship -- regardless of gender or who is bringing home the bacon!

One thing men and women do agree on? Both think -- at 70% and 68% respectively -- that it's OK to try to influence a partner's money decisions. For the better, we hope. A good example is this woman, whose boyfriend convinced her to pay off her student loan debt, which she did in just three years.
