Liza Lou at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac

Contemporary artist Liza Lou is holding her first solo exhibition at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Salzburg, Austria from May 14 - July 16. The exhibition will feature a site-specific installation titled The Waves and a new series of Blue paintings woven out of glass and beads. Like water, the paintings reflect and shimmer with the radiance of the Indian Ocean, near which they were made.

For the installation, Lou has covered the gallery walls with a grid of a thousand white clothes, scaled to the size of a dish cloth. The Waves spans three ground floor rooms and transforms the space into a memorial for unrecognized and anonymous labor, making the invisible, visible.

Lou's work has distilled from an exploration of popular culture and social themes to a singular meditation on process and materiality. In 2005, she founded a collective in Kwa-Zulu Natal that employs Zulu artisans to assist with her unique studio practice. Lou's trademark medium of glass beads and her large scale sculptures has captivated an international audience. She was born in New York and currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
