The all-important July 4th holiday has delayed this week's Top 5 Comedy Videos post with its incessant delicious smoked meat, crazy exploding fireworks and all around patriotic beer-fuled mayhem. But now that that's over, we can get down to business.
With the latest Twilight movie hitting theaters last week, causing tweens from all over to stay up way too late, The Onion News Network weighed in with this report on an Al Qaeda terror attack aborted to spare the life of revered author Stephenie Meyer. The revelation that Osama Bin Laden is on "Team Jacob" really brings the entire craze to the obvious next level.
Two of the funniest videos the hit the web over the last week came from unlikely sources in settings that don't typically produce comedic moments. First up, in the midst of the G20 protests which saw angry anarchists from around the world descend on Toronto to rail against global capitalism, one lone man just wanted know why the mall was closed. "Why?!"
At around the same time, Elena Kagan was undergoing the traditional Supreme Court nominee grilling and produced a funny moment of her own. When Lindsey Graham asked Kagan where she was on Christmas, she assumed that he was actually asking her a serious question about the Christmas Day bomber. But no, it turns out he just wanted to know what Jews do on Christmas. Kagan was forced to tell the truth and perpetuate an accurate stereotype.
"You know, like all Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant."
For more intentional humor from the usual suspects, College Humor and Funny or Die each had some solid entries this week. While Bros Icing Movies and James Franco's tribute to Sam Raimi were pretty great, my two favorites of the week were College Humor's somewhat belated iPhone 4 FaceTime parody ad and Funny or Die's utterly irreverent and fun "Havin' a Summah" featuring the always charming Zooey Deschanel. These videos were perfect for sending me and my new iPhone 4 off into a brutally hot July 4th weekend. In conclusion, Zooey, any time you want to do a little FaceTime, I'm ready.
