Did Clinton Just Say She Would Take Punitive Action Against Serbia?

In the debate:

I would be moving very aggressively to hold the Serbian government responsible

That may poll well. But that would be really, really bad policy.

Serbs just lost a major part of what they considered an essential part of their country. That is a tough pill for anyone to swallow. They did burn our embassy and riot. That is ridiculous. But Serbia faces a choice right now between Europe and Russia. The Serbian people just narrowly voted for a pro-European president a few weeks ago and it looks like they will seek to move toward membership in the European Union. So taking punitive actions or hyping the rhetoric toward Serbia would only serve to push Serbia away from us and away from Europe toward right-wing nationalism and Russia. Talk about counter-productive.
