Will The New York Times Next Drop 'Illegal Immigrant?'

The Associated Press announced Tuesday that the news organization will no longer use the term "illegal immigration," a decision that carries significant weight given how many media outlets both use AP copy and rely on its Stylebook for guidance.

The Huffington Post does not use the term "illegal immigrant," but a number of prominent news organizations do, including the New York Times.

Shortly after the AP news broke, the Times didn't have any news of their own on whether or not to use "illegal immigrant." But standards editor Phil Corbett indicated to The Huffington Post that editors are discussing the matter and could have some more information soon.

"We've been discussing some possible revisions in our guidance on these terms for a couple of months," Corbett said in an email. "Coincidentally, we had been expecting to send a memo to the staff soon, possibly this week."
