A key part of audience development involves community engagement. When I first came on board with Armitage Gone! Dance, I asked Karole Armitage about her gay following. Surely being the choreographer of Madonna's iconic "Vogue" was enough to catapult you to queer diva icon status? But remembering that Karole only returned to the United States 10 years ago to reform Armitage Gone! Dance (which had it's first incarnation in 1979), it takes time to settle roots down again, no matter how receptive the terrain. One quick call to Paul Menard, the Director of Cultural Programming at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, and we set a date for this conversation to take place between Karole and the legendary Benny Ninja, and successfully sold out the event with only social media marketing. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!
