Chelsea Market's New Doughnut Spot

Dunkin' Donuts may have a monopoly on the Munchkin, but the mini doughnut -- light, fluffy, with an actual hole in the center -- that's the Doughnuttery's forte.

Think of the Doughnuttery, which recently opened in Chelsea Market (right next to Beyond Sushi), as a Baked By Melissa but for -- you guessed it -- doughnuts.

We recently stopped by the charming booth and were immediately grasped by the wafting scent of fried dough, then promptly reeled in by the miniature doughnut conveyor belt. (What is it with miniature objects?) After pondering the 20-plus flavors, we finally settled on a sample platter of six, including two dipping sauces: dulce de leche and deep dark chocolate. (Too much? Heck no.)

The Funfetti-esque sprinkled doughnut was a delectable entreé, but our taste buds went crazy for the House of Cardamom (cardamom and orange zest) and the Urban Monkey (coffee, banana and coconut). All the doughnuts are made by tossing flavored powdered sugar onto the plain little guys and shaking them up to fully coat. But not to worry -- you can still get a classic glazed if that's more your speed.

The bites will run you $6 (for six) and go up to $75 (for 100): perfect for your coworker's birthday bash or, you know, that time you happen to mosey into the Ninth Avenue Anthropologie on a Tuesday night.
