If you look before you leap,
And worry that you're in too deep,
If flag-draped coffins cost you sleep,
You're "dithering."

If you bring the experts in
To see if there's some way to win,
And think about the next of kin,
You're "dithering."

If you'd rather get it right
Before you send them off to fight,
If answers aren't black and white,
You're "dithering."

Better to be Bush and Cheney,
One naïve and one so brainy,
Ev'ry judgment foreordainy,
No "dithering."

Better to be just like Rummy,
Confident, serene and chummy.
(Too bad he was such a dummy.)
No "dithering."

Better just to cook the data,
Buy a scheme that's still in beta,
Rush to war and fix it later --
No "dithering."

So if you think this stuff's a snap,
Just names and numbers on a map,
Instead of, say, an endless trap,
Stop "dithering."

Announce that talking's had its fun,
That all your experts think as one,
That you don't mind your dreams undone,
Stop "dithering."

But if you grasp the price of war,
And wonder what we're fighting for,
Before you pledge a decade more:
Keep "dithering."
