I thought I'd seen all the knockoffs: Jackie sunglasses, jewelry collections, shift dresses, and, of course, the endless array of Jackie inspired self-help books, but a new Washington-area bakery says the time has come to pass Jackie's torch into the world of culinary delights.
At Frosting: A Cupcakery in Chevy Chase, Maryland, owners and newlyweds Michelle Snow and Todd Bracken have inaugurated the Jackie Oh! Cupcake.
It's simple, chic (black and white, bien sur), and, like the Queen of Camelot, jealously guards its privacy.
When I asked the ingredients, I was told the owners "prefer not to share measurements since it's a family recipe."
I did learn how Michelle and Todd cooked up the idea of a cupcake homage to the first lady of fashion.
"We came up with it together while working on our business plan and menu. We remember it being a cold, dark, rainy weekend and we were working from bed, and we were trying to come up with a name for this combination (almond top, chocolate bottom), " Todd wrote me in an email.
"I was thinking since it's very simple and chic and classy -- not to mention scrumptious -- that we call it Jackie O, as well as being black and white -- something you seem to see Jackie O herself wearing very often -- the simple, black dress. Then to give it a little kick, and to make it a little cuter and less about the person than about the cupcake -- we added the "h" and the "!" like you're surprised at how good such a simple cupcake can be."
Todd and Michelle, who were married in high style last New Year's Eve, have done some inspiring of their own. Romance novelist Alison Kent is using their unique love story as the plot in her new book The Icing on the Cake coming September 13 from True Vows Publishers.
