President Bush has been working for Al Qaeda. He just doesn't know it,
writes my friend Rick Angres in Santa Monica.
Not by invading Afghanistan. That made sense. Not by threatening to
invade Iraq. That made sense. But ever since he actually invaded iraq
he has done more for Al Qaeda than a hundred Bin Ladens. They
may have had a safe haven in Afghanistan, but they never had an entire
nation as a training ground. Now they do. The sympathy the rest of the
world had for us after 9/11 has been virtually destroyed and with it
the golden opportunity to work with moderate Islam and everybody else
to attack the root causes of terrorism (poverty, corruption, ignorance
and helplessness) Instead of declaring a war on terror which only
creates more terror in the long run and in the short run functions as a
recruiting mechanism for every raging psycho on the loose to join the
legions of suicide bombers.
It is often said that we have no good options in Iraq. That's not quite
true. if we made it our foreign policy to admit that our invasion and
occupation was a horrible mistake we could start working with the rest
of the world to fix the mess we made. Neither Syria, nor Iran will get
any long term advantages from eternal chaos and bloodshed on their
doorsteps. the Shiites, the Sunnis and the Kurds also have little to gain
from endless civil war. only Al Qaeda will continue to be the winner if
the status quo is maintained.
We need to reshuffle all the cards. We need a new deal
