The New West Side Story: Food Vendors at War

There was conflict on 55th Street between Fifth & Sixth Avenues, with one group dressed in red and green to demonstrate they're on team Bistro Milano while the other supported the Sweet Sweets Truck.

In response to the city's economic woes, more people have become street vendors, including a recent graduate of NYU's Law School and a CUNY doctoral candidate. Many are unsure about which corner belong to whom, and there are now serious turf wars.

Leonard Bernstein, take note: this would infuse new life to the next incarnation of West Side Story . Instead of the Sharks and Jets, you can update the songs to be about Saatchi & Saatchi vs. Wafeld & Dingles, the truck that had been parked in front of the agency's building on Hudson St. The rumble would be replaced by a softball game in Central Park with tap water provided for truck fans, bottled for the ad agency supporters.

Gyro makers, sausage purveyors, Street Sweetsand the Treats Truck are finding themselves attacked. Where are the pimps when you need them?
