Budget backpackers and adventurous travelers visit hostels around the world for more than cheap rates. Sure, it's always amazing when you can save big on overnight accommodations and use that money on another part of your trip, but low room rates are just one of the things that draw travelers to hostels.
Staying in a hostel gives you an opportunity to meet and get to know people from all over the world -- the common rooms and cool built-in bars and cafes ensure you have the chance to meet other travelers. Another major benefit of hostels is that they typically have more character than hotels. Some hostels have themes, some have rich histories, others are particularly eco-friendly -- but they are all quirky and unique.
We've tracked down some of the most interesting hostels from all over the world and you won't believe some of these places exist (and are open to travelers). From a historic lighthouse on the coast of California to a repurposed Boeing 747 at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport, these wacky hostels are everywhere and, yes, you can really stay overnight.
