Witnesses to History: NYPL's Lions Salute the Troops on Memorial Day (Slideshow)

As Americans celebrate Memorial Day, we remember what the day stands for: honor, as well as the patience and fortitude of the brave men and women of our military. New Yorkers who know Patience and Fortitude -- the famous lions flanking the grand staircase outside NYPL's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building -- will perhaps not be surprised that these regal guardians of the city's passing parade have for nearly a century played an important and ennobling role silently watching over countless parades honoring America's servicemen and women. The Library Lions are truly witnesses to history.
