Trying to Educate the Education Reformers, Without Success
By
Diane Ravitch

Guest Writer
Campbell Brown mistakenly said that 2/3 of American students were "below grade level." What the national test calls "proficiency" is equivalent to an A. No one expects the majority of students to score an A; if they did, we would call it grade inflation.

Trump and the Media, Co-dependents
By
Tom Allon
, Contributor
President, City & State NY
Look up the definition of co-dependent in the dictionary and it indicates an unhealthy relationship between two people that is dysfunctional, leads to abusive behavior and is just plain old bad for both parties. I can't think of a better word to describe Trump's budding romance with the media.

Carly Fiorina for Secretary of Education
By
Stanley Fish
, Contributor
Davidson-Kahn Distinguished University Professor and Professor...
Carly Fiorina recognizes the danger that a technology-dominated classroom -- a classroom focused on programmable skills rather than on messy and ever-changing ideas -- will become the location of job training rather than intellectual exploration. Education's great task, she said at a recent New Hampshire education summit, is not to prepare people for jobs, but to "fill children's souls," to make of them the kinds of citizens who can contribute to a participatory democracy. And that task, she insisted, requires exposure to music, literature, art and philosophy -- the very subjects that are currently falling by the wayside in the rush to elevate the STEM subjects to the be all and end all. From where I sit, this is just common sense, but it is not the common sense coming from the Obama administration (or the Bush administration before it).

Will we have charter school-backed securities that these hedge funds can speculate in and manipulate the price of? Charter school bubbles that will blow up in our faces? Instead of starving our schools of critical funding and pushing market-based, test-driven policies that ultimately fail our kids, we should be relying on evidence and input from those closest to the classroom to find solutions that work.
