"Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many," USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
The 24-year-old, who is widely recognized as the greatest gymnast of all time, also said she was "not having as much fun" at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Without the champion gymnast, the American team lost the gold medal to Russia.
She won a gold medal in 1992 and just logged her eighth Summer Games.
