Wise, a subject of Ava Duvernay's "When They See Us," was exonerated in 2002 after serving 14 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
The 21-year-old actor from Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” was also the youngest ever to win in his category.
The director's guests were the men who were wrongly convicted of a 1989 rape when they were just teenagers.
"His power is his survival," the director said about the criminal justice reform activist who was portrayed in her Netflix limited series "When They See Us."
