Although Christianity did eventually emerge as a separate religion, similar falsifications of biblical history are rampant in collections of Renaissance art spanning hundreds of years. These distortions were not harmless. They imposed a dangerous division between Christians and Jews that lingers today.
Where our patients sometimes live in darkness, squalor, danger and hunger, whether run-down trailer, homeless tent or government project, the emergency departments are different. They are places of bright lights and warmth, safety and relief; where beds are clean and food is available. And if nothing else, places where there are people who are interested and polite.
Christianity, for all the good it has done, often becomes its own worst enemy. Any hostility is understood. That is not to say that church is unnecessary. But its relevance depends on its imitation of Christ, that is, how effectively it demonstrates the heart of the gospel and not just to sustain its own sterling image.
