The destruction of your home world is one of the worst things that could ever happen to a science fiction character. It's also a popular theme laced throughout science fiction movies and television shows: characters who survive the loss and utter destruction of their home worlds. The annihilation of planets happen in a variety of different ways, from explosions, to war, or a gradual destruction of a planet, where the planet's environment causes the destruction of the lifeforms that inhabit it. There are many famous planets that have been destroyed over the years, and many characters who have survived the annihilation of them, and we'll take a look at a couple of them below.
There are famous planets destroyed, but none more famous than Alderaan, the home planet of Princess Leia Organa Skywalker, destroyed by The Empire (or Death Star more specifically). We all remember Lord Vader standing with Leia, as she is questioned about the secret hiding spot of the rebel army, and when she gives up the rebel base to save her planet, the go and blow up Alderaan anyways.
A newer addition to the "My Planet was Destroyed" group is Spock, who suffered the loss of his hope world Vulcan, to a black hole created in the planet's core by the Romulan, Nero. Spock Prime, and Spock, both watch on as their planet is swallowed alive by a black hole. This destruction makes it impossible for Spock to command the enterprise with his feelings having been, which then sets up Kirk to take his rightful place in the Captain's chair of the enterprise.
