This week I got the chance to meet the impressive Carlos Menchaca, who is running for New York City Council to represent District 38, which encompasses Sunset Park, Red Hook, Greenwood Heights, Borough Park, Windsor Terrace and Bay Ridge Towers. Carlos spoke to supporters and explained why he is running for New York City Council.
His bid for office was spurred by his leadership experience during Superstorm Sandy relief efforts in Red Hook. If elected, Carlos would become the first openly LGBT elected official in Brooklyn, and the first Mexican-American elected official in the entire city. Carlos has six years of experience in New York City politics, working first for the Brooklyn Borough President as Capital Budget and Policy Coordinator, then as LGBT and HIV/AIDS Liaison for City Council, Office of the Speaker. Elections for City Council will be held Nov. 5.
