On Thursday, July 16 an eight-year old Liberian girl was allegedly raped by four young boys, ages 9 to 14 in Phoenix, Arizona, according CNN.com. The boys and the victimare Liberian refugees. They allegedly lured her into a shed in the Pine Ridge apartments by promising her chewing gum before restraining her and then sexually assaulting her for 10 to 15 minutes.
"This is probably one of the worst crimes we have come across in many years in city of Phoenix," said Phoenix Sergeant Andy Hill during a press conference. Besides the young ages of the victim and the alleged suspects, Hill is shocked by the girl's family, who is not supporting her because they are "ashamed and embarrassed by their child."
Rape wasn't outlawed in Liberia until just a few years ago. Women who speak of the subject in that culture apparently bring shame to their family. As a result, the child has been put into the custody of Social Services.-SG
