Wal-Mart Fires Employee For Secretly Taping Reporter's Calls

An employee for Wal-Mart secretly taped phone conversations between members of its public relations staff and a reporter at the New York Times, and intercepted text messages and electronic pages involving people who do not work for the company, Wal-Mart officials disclosed yesterday.

Wal-Mart fired the technician it said was responsible and the employee's supervisor, both of whom worked in information systems at the retailer's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. Another manager was disciplined. Spokeswoman Mona Williams said she could not say why the technician recorded the conversations.
