'08 Candidates In Fundraising Frenzy Before First Quarter Deadline

Forget campaigning. Last week, Rudolph W. Giuliani held a presidential fund-raiser every day of the week. Senator John McCain raised money at three events on Wednesday and another Thursday, racking up 27 this month alone. And Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is racing through five fund-raisers on Friday and Saturday, culminating with a gala in Miami that ends three hours before midnight.

This hurricane of money-raising is testimony to the importance of what has become the first contest of the 2008 presidential race: the first fund-raising period of the campaign, which ends at midnight Saturday.
