Author Halberstam Dies In San Francisco Car Crash

A car accident in Menlo Park, California has claimed the life of David Halberstam, Pulitzer prize winning author and journalist.

Halberstam, best known for his coverage of the Vietnam War, began his career with the Daily Times Leader in West Point, Mississippi--a humble beginning that presaged greatness. In the 1960's, Halberstam began work at the New York Times, covering the Vietnam War. He's perhaps best known for that war coverage, winning both a Polk and a Pulitzer for his reporting and penning a pair of books that helped define the conflict: The Making of a Quagmire and The Best and the Brightest. Halberstam would go on to publish fourteen additional books, many about sports. In 2002, he published Firehouse, which told the story of the firemen at Engine 40, Ladder 35 in New York City, on September 11.

He was 73 years old.
