France's president-elect, Nicolas Sarkozy, returned from a Mediterranean mini-holiday yesterday for a commemoration for victims of slavery, his first public engagement since winning last weekend's election.
Tanned from his three-day break on a luxury yacht off Malta, Mr Sarkozy, 52, joined outgoing President Jacques Chirac at the Elyseé Palace, which will be his new home when he takes over in a week.
