Mexico's state oil company, Petroleos de Mexico, said it was evacuating all of its more than 18,000 offshore workers in the southern Gulf of Mexico, which includes the giant Cantarell oil field. Dozens of historically significant Mayan sites also were emptied.

Dean -- which has killed at least 12 people across the Caribbean -- quickly picked up strength after brushing Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

"but of course once Queen Hillary or prince O-bomb-a is crowned, hurricanes will be a thing of the past- only blue skies and puffy white clouds..."

Of course. There is only one true religion, and thats the religion of AGW. True Believers like the Goreacle and O-bomb-a and their faithful flock will lead the world into Paradise.

One can alway rebuild after a Hurricane, but once Homeland Security reaches them ..there is never coming back

Homeland Security tightens Grip. Entering Latin America and the Caribbean

It looks like neo imperial America is increasing her empire. Touting "the Time Has Finally Come" and "..the long anticipated event",Homeland Security and apparently her little sister the, Latin American Caribbean Security Council (LACHSS ), is holding a summit November 7-10, 2007 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. With a goal of bringing Latin America and the Caribbean countries into the existing homeland security apparatus, the LACHSS summit has a stated mission to...

Too bad these comments degenerated rapidly into a flabby dick fight.
Extreme weather in general and not just hurricanes is the result of global warming. The US is having a record breaking heat wave, record breaking rainfall and flooding and record breaking draughts. There have also been severe monsoon floods across South Asia, abnormally heavy rains in northern Europe, China, Sudan, Mozambique and Uruguay, extreme heat waves in southeastern Europe and Russia, and unusual snowfall in South Africa and South America this year.

Wonder how much it cost the taxpayers when Bush declared Texas a disaster area and called up 10,000 natl guardsmen for the hurricane-Dean- that NEVER HIT TEXAS??? What a jackasshole!

And yet something tells me if he hadn't called up the Natinal Guard and the hurricane had hit Texas, you'd still be calling him a jackasshole.

Could you imagine what would happen if a Category 5 hurricane like Dean struck the U.S. East Coast? Oh right, the Republicans would say it's God punishing the liberals.

The dangerous thing about Hurricane Dean is that you don't know where it is going. It could be going to New Hampshire, Alabama, Florida, Delaware, California, Arkansas, Texas, Indiana, New Jersey, Illinois--Raaaargghhh!

That's a little joke. Very little.

Cheney's weather machine is malfunctioning. If it were working properly it would have diverted this hurricane to New Orleans to displace and kill more black people.

I guess he will have to send it in for repairs " right after he gets out of jail for defying the judiciary committee subpoena.

The photo illustration for this story is that of Tulum, Mexico. Tulem is an ancient walled Mayan city located on the Yucatan coast in the state of Quintana Roo.

The ruin in the photo is the Temple of Kukulkan. The temple overlooks the aquamarine sea. It is a stunning visage.

Yucatan is extremely flat and the plain runs for many miles inland. The temple is described by many guides as the highest point in Yucatan.

Think of the differences in the response that Bush gave and what Calderon of Mexico is giving.

During and after Katrina hit, Bush was vacationing in Crawford.

BEFORE Dean has hit, Calderon has canceled his presence in the North American Summit in Canada and has rushed back to Mexico so that he can be present for any quick decision which might be needed.

Wasn't it Lincoln who described Democracy as "Government of the people, by the people and FOR THE PEOPLE"?

Crawford is much closer to New Orleans than DC is. They do have staff, an office, and telecommunications there.

TimN, our resident meteorologist, was quick to point out that hurricane season started a month and a half ago...he wasn't quick to point out that the typical season doesn't see major storms until around the mid of the end of August, with the height of the season being between August 20th to around the end of September...
next we'll be hearing how nice and cool last winter was.

My bad...I meant two and a half months ago. Most seasons will see several named hurricanes by late August. To date we've had one in '07, making this a very light season so far.

TimN is highly quallified in the area of science. His dad bought him a chemestry set for christmas last year. Since then he has been studying the effects that volcainos have on climate change by pouring water into a funnel filled with baking soda.

So far, the only conclusive result from this experiment is that man made volcainos in the bathroom are a primary cause of spankings.

I saw what a Category 5 storm did to Biloxi when Camille hit. What a terrible tragedy!

My thoughts and prayers are with the people in the path of this monster.

Everyone please dig deep for the International Red Cross -- they will be among the first responders.

Too late. The damage is done. Good luck reversing it now. Bush didn't cause climate change, he just did absolutely nothing to slow it down and denied there was ever a problem.

Denial - GOP method of operation for the following:

1. Climate Change
2. Iraq
3. The deficit
4. Illegal immigration
5. Bin Laden
6. NCLB
7. Social Security
8. Health Care
9. Unemployment
10. The Patriot Act
11. Corruption in his administration
12. Evolution
13. Science in general
14. Walter Reid
15. Abu Grabe
16. Illegal torture
17. Valery Plame
18. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
