The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is expected to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost half, potentially creating a rift with top White House officials and other military commanders over the course of the war.

Administration and military officials say Marine Gen. Peter Pace is likely to convey concerns by the Joint Chiefs that keeping well in excess of 100,000 troops in Iraq through 2008 will severely strain the military. This assessment could collide with one being prepared by the U.S. commander in Iraq, Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, calling for the U.S. to maintain higher troop levels for 2008 and beyond.

Your post is a simplistic answer to a complicated question. Have you considered the results of your solution? Have you considered the economic and political consequences of your aspiration? What are you willing to give up?

You can not cut the number of troops for the simple reason that the remaining troops will be in danger.

A complete pull out is the only way to bring the troops home. They must come home, now!

Looks like Pace wants out, and since Marines never quit, he has devised this exit strategy. The trouble is, if a blasted moron like me can see that, then surely Bush can, too, and refuse to fire him out of spite.

"I was with that which others did not want to be,
I went to where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing of those who gave nothing,
and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness that I feel.
I have seen the face of terror, felt the stinging cold of fear,
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments love.
I have cried pain and hope,
But most of all I have lived times others would say were best forgotten.
At least some day I'll be able to say,
That I was proud what I was, A Soldier."

Somehow the result, which is Iraq is being lost upon most because it is just a product of 60 years of US foreign policy. The question becomes what are American's willing to give up to no longer have US troops placed in the Middle East to secure our need for Oil or in Asia to balance the designs of China or the re-armament of Japan?

Bush will find the troops even if he has to draft your grand parents, both male and female, or your 12 year old brother or son.The gang of Impostors must be stopped now if we want a country left.

I am disgusted! Millions of people protest this war, thousands object, thousands get blown up, hundreds of thousands wounded and mutilated, millions displaced, billions are spent, militaries destroyed, reputations smashed....and it takes two olds coots -- Warner and Pace -- to offer mild objections to the war this week and all of a sudden...the troops may come home, the war may end! What the hell are all the rest of us....chopped spinach?
I am totally disgusted.

This makes it clear why Bush didn't nominate Gen. Pace for a 2nd term an Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. I guess Pace finally got tired of drinking from Dumbya's fountain.

Peter Pace was fine with the Bush plan for winning the war until he was denied a second term as chairman - Gotta love the military brass

Why don't the Bush supporters volunteer for service in Iraq/ After all, on any given day, there are 15,000 National Guards, 55 years of age, in the field.

Why didn't Hannity pick up a rifle while he was visiting the troops. He could have eliminated some of those who want to destroy Ameica.

Surely you jest: would _you_ trust the likes of Hannity with anything packing more kinetic energy than a Nerf gun?

Hey Femi, response to your idle crack about my retirement is back a couple pages.
i doubt you will be interested because it will disrupt your delusions but it's there anyway. it is also something I have talked about here on several occasions. We do have a bit of pride about what we do, it has turned out better than we ever expected. oh and the liberals around hate us because we actually compete with ineffectual government agencies that are losing funding because we are taking their "clients".

SHHHh, we work quietly buut effectively.

Nobody but the dumbest of the 29%ers believe there are as many as 5000 al Qaeda in Iraq.

What the military intelligence folks are telling the press is 1000-1500.

The people being captured are mostly home-grown anti-government and anti-occupation insurgents, and sectarian thugs bent on killing off "The Others".

It does appear to be true that we've had some good successes against AQI, but we're getting them in dozens, not hundreds.
