A county judge struck down Iowa's decade-old gay marriage ban as unconstitutional Thursday and ordered local officials to process marriage licenses for six gay couples.

Gay couples from anywhere in Iowa could apply for a marriage license from Polk County under Judge Robert Hanson's ruling.

"Maybe one of these republican so called family value persons can explain it."

Sure, just as soon as they get back from the airport bathroom.

If for religious reasons people object to gay or lesbian relationships they are free not to have one. If gay and lesbian couples want to legalize their relationship it is their business, they are adults and allowed to live by their believes, not our believes.

I believe we have separation of church and state, the state has no right to impose religious believes upon citizen.

If marriage is holy it is in the eyes of the beholder. All that counts is the love and respect the two people feel for each other. We have lots of loneliness in our society, let people live happily together regardless of sex.

Why are people bothered by how people they don't even know live their lives?? Maybe someone can explain it to me. Maybe one of these republican so called family value persons can explain it.

As a gay parent, I find it extremely frustrating that my older sister, who has a son off in college just got married and got immediate spousal benefits, whereas me and my partner, raising a kindergartener cannot.

Should her husband pass away (heaven forbid), then she gets his social security benefits as a widow, but she has no child to raise, no mortgage, no car payment....but should my partner pass away (heaven forbid), me and my daughter would not get any benefits and would probably become homeless since most life insurance is just legalized extortion anyway and you don't get much out of it.

But we are all legal taxpayers. There's no equality in that type of arrangement.

If you want marriage to be between only a man and a woman, you cannot wrap up 1,700 benefits, rights and privileges in it. That doesn't sit well with Lady Justice. It might sit well with the voters, but back in the 50's separate drinking fountains fit in well with them too.

I can't figure out why anyone would be against gay marriage.

The "gay" marriage issue is a classic example of how liberals actually operate. Most of what they want isn't supported by the majority of people so they use the courts and trickery to win.
This is exactly what happened in Massachusetts! The legislature had been presented with a referendum and the refused to let the voters vote on the issue. Huge deals were made to make it happen too. The legislature bends over backwards for drunk drivers, illegals, child molestors, and of course gays!
Oh all of the gay activists claimed that the majority of the citizens were "for it anyway" ..so why are they afraid to let us vote on it? Gee I wonder! The leglislature!
Of course our "governor" DO-ALL Patrick thinks it's wonderful. Democracy was great when we voted him in..but suddenly now it isn't!

"Most of what they want isn't supported by the majority of people." Not true. Serioulsy, is five minutes of reasearch too much to ask? Maybe you are correct on gay marriage, not that it matters, but you are certanly wrong on almost every issue. Polling data on heatlh care, the U.N., taxes, etc. all show "liberal" ideas have majority support, often by a wide margin. Welcome to the rela world. You're not going to like it.

"Democracy" doesn't mean that you get to disregard the Constitution. Just because an idea is popular doesn't make it right, e.g. slavery. The Constitution is what makes it possible for you to have a voice in government, at all. Be careful how you treat it. Read about Amendment 2 in Colorado. You might learn something.

Iowa proves Evolution can happen anywhere, you would have thought a Blue CA or NY would be next to have marriage Equality, but Iowa got there first.

Once again, the will of the people overturned by a deviant judge. This will end.

Brother/sister marriage and polygamy narrows the gene pool. Marriage between two men or two women does not.

I now take an oath to actually proof read my posts before posting. Sorry.

I don't see how two gay people getting married affects my marriage. If they want to make a "Defense of Marriage" amendment, instead of banning gay marriage maybe they should make infidelity a felony and make divorce illegal. Those are much bigger threats to marriage.

Thanks Judge Hanson,

Now we can all sit back and listen to John Edwards explain again why he is uncomfortable being around fags.

And we can watch Hussein tap dance around all the black christian leaders who scream bloody murder whenever gays try to compare gay marriage to the civil rights struggle.

Most importantly, now Iowa will put a constitutional ban on gay marriage on the ballot in 2008. Can you all say huge conservative turn-out, I knew you could.

Hell, maybe even Hillary will finally come out of the closet.

And that will be struck down, too. Discrimination is illegal. Get over it.

Read the article and the judge's ruling. One could argue that incesest could be legalized by this ruling.

Hanson ruled that the state law allowing marriage only between a man and a woman violates the constitutional rights of due process and equal protection.

How is not allowing a marriage between a brother and sister not also a violation of due process and equal protection? Hell one could even argue for polygamy based on this.

Before many here jump on me and claim i am equating incest and polygamy to homosexuality stop. I believe the government should not be involved at all in deciding which consenting adults can and can not marry.

There are medical justifications for the "brother/sister" argument.

Polygamy? Who cares? Not me.

And the justification would be what exactly?

"I believe the government should not be involved at all in deciding which consenting adults can and can not marry."

Then you shouldn't have wrapped so many rights, benefits and privileges up in it.

Defense of Marriage Law?

I love that term. I take it that I am supposed to love my wife more if the government discriminates against the gay couple down the street. If you want to defend marriage, bar the likes of Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears from getting married.

I care less about what the people in my neighborhood do in their bedroom, than I do about how they take care of their yard.

While reading this thread, I am filled with hope that soon the majority of citizens of this country will look upon marriage between two loving, gay people, the same way, we now look at marriage between partners of different races and religions. Not "special" rights. Just the same rights the rest of us enjoy.

It is legal in the US for white supremicists, KKK members, incarcerated child rapists, cult leaders, and Ted Nugent to marry and raise children.
And we deny law abiding gay people the same right. Seems a bit...off.

I remember back when Bill Clinton hadn't yet won the nomination for his first term. Almost all the presidential candidates, Democrat and Republican, descended on Iowa for a rally where they promised never to allow gay marriage. It was ugly and embarrassing to the intelligent people of my state.

As an Iowan, I can tell you that progressive thinking is alive and well here. We're an educated lot, and we do know right from wrong. You wouldn't know it from the radio, though. In Iowa, it is almost impossible to find any kind of intelligence on the radio. WHO, which used to be THE great radio station...balancing the left and the right extremely well...is now a bastion of hate. Limbaugh, Hannity, etc...a virtual wet dream for Clear Channel. And our Public Radio? It's a joke now. Absolutely conservative biased.

I am proud of Iowa for many reasons, not the least of which is an intelligent judge making a reasoned and enlightened ruling.
