The latest film by Brian DePalma, director of numerous well-known movies such as "Scarface," "The Untouchables" and "Carrie/" is aptly called "Redacted" and has just been shown for the first time as part of the Venice Film Festival. DePalma spoke to reporters there, saying, among other things, "Pictures are what will stop the war."

The film centers on perhaps the most horrendous known atrocity involving U.S. troops, the gang rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl and four members of her family in March 2006. DePalma had directed in 1989 a movie about a rape by U.S. soldiers of a Vietnamese girl called "Casualties of War," starring Sean Penn and the young Michael J. Fox.

"Kandahar, the documentaries on abuse of women in afghanistan. the megahit novel, the kite runner, is in development. BATTLE OF ALGIERS ABOUT THE FRENCH FORCES IN AFRICA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME. . . . iranian film is the best in the world on war and has documented saddams atrocities-"

Wow! You're highlighting films about some other countries besides America that commit atrocities. There's hope . .

"your ignorance of that great film is the most shocking demonstration of ignorance i have ever seen on this board"

Really? The most shocking EVER? Huffpo contributors must be a bright bunch. I'm sure every single one of them has heard of that film. As for myself not knowing about it, in some ways that proves my point that anti-American films get way, way, way more hype and love-ins. I'm quite young, and my few years of education have been loaded with anti-American bias from gradeschool on. It's only when I read about the Marshall Plan in history class that I began to realize America is the most amazing and generous country in this world's history. And furthur study into world history just bolstered my opinion. Awfully glad you American chaps were around this past century, or I'd be stuck in some gulag singing songs to the Great Leader as I slaved for the state.

god knows what we're doing to each other ann2- but it's so easy not to be totally wrong about these things with google on the tab... different opinions i understand. we would all be better off if we spoke more heartfelt about opinions and didn't try to duck behind half and partial truths and "facts" that just aren't facts. there's no reason for it here it's all about opinions and no one can prove anything anyway. i remain very very highly suspicious of people who flatter america because, like rubbing a cat's belly, it enables you to get america to do anything you want. in any case, i note you did not form your opinions about america reading about americans walking into iraqi homes and carrying people off and shooting people. let's note that that isn't how you got your impression of america- by reading that. what a good number of americans learned from the matrshall plan and all this goodness is that they can bomb and kill whoever they want wherever and whenever. that is why we are here: those americans are in power and deeply entrenched in both parties.

Will there ever be a movie about the UN atrocities in the Congo and elsewhere (child rape, etc.)? Will there ever be a movie about the torture, rape, beheadings, child-killing etc. that the forces of the Religion of Peace have committed in Afghanistan and Iraq, Thailand, India, etc? How about a movie about the French forces in Africa? Or one about Saddam's sons' rape rooms, and all the mass graves his regime filled? Of course not. Silly questions -- the only movie head-in-sand Europeans like is an anti-American movie. Next time you decadent, cowardly, ungrateful and whiny twits involve yourselves in a world war, the Yanks should just save their lives and their money, stay home, and let you morons implode. These American soldiers were tried, found guilty, and imprisoned. That's more than anyone can say for all the war criminals in your own countries.
I love you Americans!!! You've got the best nation on earth. Wish I lived in your country.

don't patronize americans ann, with your pandering swill. rhat's what we get from exiled greaseballs who need a few billion and a bombing run for their own agenda. you're pure red-state rube- and no you don't live in my country. the last dumb bunny who betrayed such shocking ignorance had to be educated on christian atrocities in africa. he assumed of course there are none with his instinctive self-righteousness.
now if you lived anywhere except under your rock you would be not only aware of movies covering those subjects- but you would have seen several. Kandahar, the documentaries on abuse of women in afghanistan. the megahit novel, the kite runner, is in development. BATTLE OF ALGIERS ABOUT THE FRENCH FORCES IN AFRICA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME. your ignorance of that great film is the most shocking demonstration of ignorance i have ever seen on this board. iranian film is the best in the world on war and has documented saddams atrocities- SINCE THEY ARE THE VICTIM OF MOST OF THEM BY FAR but then they also document american assistance to him. and british made torture devices he used. you couldn't possibly live outside america and be ignorant of these films. i just don't think you can be that ignorant. although conservatives are not sufficiently evolved to actually practice cinematic or pictoral art- they can only act insulted and attempt to criticize such as you have done from breathtaking ignorance.

so you went to iraq and got in over your head. now you can't get out with your pants on. someone makes a movie about your shooting of unarmed people; and you have a problem with the film.
there are so very, very many things you can't do. why worry about a film with a few minutes of your laughable war on it? everybody's mind's made up around the world anyway. they told you not to wander around in the middleast. but you did and now you're fools to the whole world; whereas they will give depalma's film awards and decorations. the film will earn him more in a week than you fools make in 10 years. do you even begin to realize how nothing you are compared to brian depalma? your schools teach your kids about him, you conservative dinks. you were fine with jesus and not hurting people and forgiveness. then you got buffaloed into the whole flag freedom john wayne deal and you're stuck with the bill. soo sorry. films about your stupidity will be playing worldwide for decades. so since osama then iraq kicked your butt, you come here trying to substitute americans for the iraqis you can't beat by calling people terrorists, etc. we see through your punk game, punks. go lose another war somewhere before you run out of sympathy.

I have known about the premeditated rape of the 14 year old girl and her family for some time now. There is another incident where a US patrol "lost it" after one soldier died from a roadside bomb and the patrol, it seems, stopped a taxi with five students coming home for the weekend from college, wasted them, and then proceeded to murder men woman and children within a nearby row of houses. I have four small points to make: 1)I read none of the above on the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and heard next to nothing about the incidents on local meadia except for NPR; 2) The robbery, rape, arson, and murder committed on the doctor family of four in Connecticut did make the front page of the local paper but did not have much legs as a story; 3) My huge, female Golden Retriever fiercely guards the house, mostly I think to protect my ageing mother. From behind the fence or at the front door she goes "balistic". Yet, when a gas meter reader extended the back of his hand over the fence she licked it and when a tradesman like a plumber "enters" the house (with our acceptance) she smells their shoes and expects to be petted; 4) I am a high school biology teacher and am beginning to seriously question if we are the most "intelligent" of god's creatures and the most evolved, at least in terms of ethics.

All this arguing about history but we all know we don't see anything on the news,we don't get a fraction of what we had in Vietnam even though video is mainstream now.We all remember the naked Vietnamese girl running away from the nepalm bomb explosion, she was seriously burned.Or the execution with a gun to the head at point blank range. If we were fighting a war against Iraq it would be one thing, but we're trying to hold the country together after destroying a system that most Americans would gladly pick over this disaster we have now.I find it heartning that someone is going to expose us to the truth.I also find it interesting how vociferously certain people act regarding this post, almost like they wish they could relegate it to a free speech zone in the ether.I would like to know what kind of government will want us to stay there,in a Muslim theocracy with Sharia as the law of the land and not a soul in this administration saying anything about Saudi Arabia involvement in 911 or a mention of the oil contracts tied up in the Iraq legislature. No,the Rightwingnuts never discuss anything that relates to the huge errors and horrific death they have visited on a small nation that had nothing to do with 911.We have wasted our nations resources, ruined the armed forces, emptied our treasury and put our children and grandchildren in bondage to foreign interests while the books are cooked so we can be told what great shape our economy is in.Today we're told Mexican truckers can run anywhere in our country and Americans will save hundreds of millions of dollars a year.I wonder what our nations truck drivers will do when their meager wages come down even more.Another industry is about to bite the dust compliments of the Republican money grubbers.

The reality is that we americans invaded Iraq because of its oil resources. The objective is to clean Iraq from its population in order to control Iraq as a territory not as a nation.
Once the social fabric of Iraq is disseminated, it will be easy to control and exploit Iraq's natural resources.

Do you think American fascist corporation care about it? Nope. And we americans are too chicken to speak or complain about it.

OIL is a necessity, essential, for our economy, it is fundamental not in monetary terms but in infrastructure terms.

Yes...Brian De Palma...propagandistic cinematographer extraordinaire, producer of such wonderful pieces as Carrie, Scarface, Carlito's Way, and other family features, outstanding in his stellar rejection of any and all political bias or motive, truly a purveyor of the unvarnished truth and staunch supporter of the etc etc etc zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

I'm sure there will be forces that try to block the release of this movie in the U.S.

And if it's released, then there will be several theatres that will refuse to show it.

The excuse will be because of excessive violence.

Meanwhile torture porn such as the "Saw" series, the new "Halloween", "The Hills Have Eyes", etc. are regularly shown to enthusiastic audiences in these same venues.

Must teach our upcoming generations their "Christian values".

You should show all the images and for perspective, their numbers should be in proportion to who's committing them as follows ...

ONE - An aberration like the one DePlama latched on to like a remora.

THOUSANDS - committed by the people we're trying to stop committing atrocities as a matter of course.

While we're at it, here at the homefront begin show the remains of a fetus after an abortion.

HooWee! That would be interesting.

Thanks, getoffmedz, for the tears. It brought back a few things I have tried to wipe away from my memory - for selfish reasons.

Without going into details, seeing a child burnt beyond recognition by our government, using our money, and for no justifiable reason is virtually impossible to erase from your conscience. Believe me.

And there are many such children, and women and men. Not all burnt, but enduring unimaginable pain and suffering inflicted by us.

For those among us who are religious and believe in hell, get ready to burn there forever. For those not religious, we deserve hell on earth.

We, all Americans, have allowed this to happen. We must be held accountable.

What I'd really like to see is all the bastards who are for continuing with the war, that keep spouting off about the surge is working... but particularly the neo-cons who created/engineered this whole thing being locked in a room for a week with the images playing 24/7 and the sound up really loud.

That is what I want to see.
