Federal officials have indefinitely suspended efforts to find six men trapped for nearly four weeks inside a coal mine after a robotic camera failed to provide any useful information, an attorney for the men's families said Friday.

"They said, 'We've exhausted the options that we know about,'" said Colin King, an attorney serving as a spokesman for all six families.

Hey, don't feel too bad for Murray. He is able to find a silver lining to this cloud. Since the incredibly dangerous retreat mining that he bribed Stickler, (another chiorboy mining manager) head of MSHA, into allowing, killed these miners. He is now pushing for "mountaintop removal mining". Less dangerous for miners, but much more dangerous for the communities surrounding the mountains, polluting their water, and allowing the possibilities if land slides, and very destructive to mountains that have been there for millions of years.

So burying 6 miners and killing 3 more will be Bob Murray's silver lining. He is pouring money into the coffers of congress trying to get them to approve his "NEW" plan to destroy mountains, entire communities, and in some instances, another industry all together, tourism.

One mans coal mining disaster, is that same mans golden opportunity to expand his greed. Bob Murray will land on his feet, even if others have to die for it.

When Americans attack unions, they are attacking those who have fought for work safety, fair pay, fair health and retirement benefits, improved production, and product improvements. These are just some of the things unions have fought for over the years for its members. At a cost of union dues, union members secured many of the same benefits for non-union workers in America.

When the unions are attacked by Americans, the unions are weakend, and, as we have witnessed over the past 30 years, most American workers lost some of these benefits.

Americans bought the anti-union propaganda of the Republican party and passed it on to their children who now parrot their parents. The same people see no connection to their own benefits at work.

This mine disaster is evidence to these facts.

Unions may do a lot of things, but I don't think they prevent mine cave-ins. Of course I could be wrong, but it seems to me negotiating with a mountain is a little beyond their scope.

Well, after a month!!!

Yes, it has worked in the mine owner's favor. Had these men been rescued, there was always the chance that they could be witnesses in an investigation.

3 kinds of closure are needed after this tragedy...

Close the mine permanently.
Place a memorial at the entrance dedicated to the heroes who died working and searching.
Put Murray in jail and give his mines and assets equally to all his miners and their families.

Sounds like socialism to me. Or social justice.

Can you imagine the return of social justice to the U.S.A.?

Not as long as there are mine owners.

Not as long as Republicans are in power.

Now the healing can start. I mean the healing called damage control. Mine owner Bob Murray will keep quite, the investigations will go slip away, the way most do with the current administration and congress. Nothing more in the news, and within a month, it will be business as usual. All thanks to our current mindset in America. Not in my back yard, so I dont care. That is why our government and corporations get away with what they do. We dont care, and we dont remember. Katrina is a great example. those of us who are not personally involved, only remember , and for a very short time, when its brought to our attention.

loki, great post, thank you so much for your insight into the American view of the world. The only way I can think of to counter-act this short term memory deficit is to write to elected officials and demand answers. Elected officials only respond if they get letters, calls or e-mails. Again thanks for the great insight

I'm with you, charon. From the very beginning it seemed like Murray was more concerned with keeping the UMW out of his mines than with the rescue of his employees. Then, when he started invoking the will of God, I knew the miners were lost. So sad! But, sadder still is the fact that there are multitudes out there who still buy this crap.

As in searching for the truth from this administration?

Yep, the New Right repubs succeeded. They brought back the bad ol' days before government regulation, before all them pesky gubmint people like OSHA started messing things up for God-fearin' biznizmen just out to make a buck. And some of those miners probably voted for the the New Right bastards.

I am so sorry.

The work-a-day man who descends into the bowels of the earth to work is a special person.

I extend all my sympathy to those who have perished in this pit: only the brave die in a hole so far from Mother Earth's bounty. I weep.

May the gods you believe in and the universe extend you special mercy for your suffering.....
