Wes Anderson: "I Can Tell You [Owen Wilson] Has Been Doing Very Well"

AP:

Owen Wilson is doing well as he recovers from an apparent suicide attempt, and is even making colleagues laugh, the director of his latest film said Monday.

"Obviously he has been through a lot this week," said Wes Anderson, who directed Wilson in "The Darjeeling Limited," one of the films in competition for the Venice Film Festival's top award.

"I can tell you he has been doing very well, he has been making us laugh," Anderson told a news conference to promote the film.

I think Owen Wilson is a smug prick. I can't stand him in movies. And I don't think he tried to kill himself, I think he got really, really high and then didn't know what he was doing. And now he's going to milk this for all it's worth. Soon enough he will be making the rounds on Larry King, The View, 20/20 and all the other talk shows, and he will be talking about what happened and how he was so depressed and he will have a strategically placed tear in his eye.

Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Many funny people have battled personal demons and lost. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call. Get the help and healing you need, Owen. We want you back.

Depression is a very poorly understood medical condition. It affects everyone whether poor or exceptionally wealthy. No one quite understands all the aspects of depression which is what it would appear has happened here along with the possibility of drug dependence. That can also be symptomatic of depression.

When I hear people mouth off about how his fame and money should solve any and all problems I can tell just how shallow they are.

And why enlist in a war you don't support? I've always wondered why the 101st Chickenhawk Brigade hasn't enlisted en masse to help support Emperor Chimpy McFlightsuit's invasion and occupation of a country posed no threat to the U.S.

I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Wilson's circumstances.

As one who has experienced the death of a loved one from suicide, I can only say that I wish him well from this point on -- that I hope he recognizes the permanence of a self-inflicted demise.

What the hell is he supposed to say? Well, you know, he is doing awful. It's a silly question in the first place where there really isn't a good answer.

Owen Wilson gets a bad rap, I love his work and I think the movies he's done with Wes are phenomenal films.

I don't see what the hell is wrong with comedy films, even "stupid ones". People who do comedy never get Oscars and from I understand, comedy can be harder. I really love my stupid comedy, life is serious enough, all form of film has a purpose, it's brain candy. YOu can't live on it but fuck, it's nice to have it here and there.

Actually, he could say something on the order of "we're all wishing Owen the best and will respect his desire for privacy at this time." And then he could shut the hell up.
Every time one of these terrific funny men throws himself under the wheels, everyone gathers around to say how sorry they are, and HOW THEY NEVER REALIZED HOW DEPRESSED HE WAS. The lesson to be learned here is that surviving an attempted suicide does not mean the guy is immediately better. He's the same guy with the same problems, and he just screamed to the world that he wants to end it all. But his friends are announcing to the press that he's doing very well. It is to weep.

Why does he have to say anything? Why say what you want. I'm sure he meant well, geesh.

And as someone who's suffered from depression their whole life, it's hard to tell people that, especially if you feel a burden to be happy all the time. Do you have depression? Have you ever?

I've dealt with it and I still do and it's hard to tell people how bad it is.
07:16 PM on 09/03/2007
Yeah, that was a pretty trite comment from Wes Anderson.

But I do hope Owen feels better because anyone who tries to commit suicide is in a depth of pain you shouldn't wish on anyone. You can never know what's in another persons heart or mind or their past or how they suffer or fail to see reality--the best thing to do is to keep your mouth shut and not judge. Wish others well and mind you own business.

"doing very well" and "he has been making us laugh" are not things I would connect in a guy who has just tried to kill himself. I don't think this Wes Anderson person gets it. Comedians go into suicidal depression, but because they can still make people laugh, people think they're doing very well. It don't work like that. Comedy is connected to tragedy by rage, and that rage has to be dealt with.

Put yourself in "this Wes Anderson person's" position- you're friends with someone from college, a bunch of nosy people want to know how he's doing, and you need to find something encouraging to say. I'd say he "gets" Owen very well- maybe even better than you, who reads everything that people say as the complete truth. You're a knucklehead, but at least not the total loser that LUNKHEAD is- that guy sucks.

Maybe Wilson was depressed at having pissed away his career on ridiculously unfunny and way overhyped Wes Anderson movies.
06:12 PM on 09/03/2007
Or maybe, he tried to kill himself because WHO CARES? My cousin tried to off himself...you dont care. Why care about Owen Wilson, who I like mind you, and his personal problems. I bet most of the people discussing why he did what he did both online and in real life are the same people that are always saying that tabloids are ridiculous and unnecessary.

Dude has always been funny and charming. Never annoying. And he's not a typical Hollywood dick, which is rare. Long live The Butterscotch Stallion.

Yeah, life's rough for you, Owen. Money, movies, fame...perhaps a different career choice would make sense. I'm sure you can still find a recruiter that'll sign you up & you can get a look at reality. It's coming home alive, before bush kills 'em all, that matters for our military & you're trying to throw away yours. Over what? Sheesh, pathetic.

You say there ain't no use in livin'
It's all a waste of time
'N you wanna throw your life away, well
People that's just fine
Go ahead on 'n get it over with then
Find you a bridge 'n take a jump
Just make sure you do it right the first
time
'Cause nothin's worse than a Suicide
Chump

You say there ain't no light a-shinin'
Through the bushes up ahead
'N we're all gonna be so sorry
When we find out you are dead
Go head on and get it over with then
Find you a bridge 'n take a jump
Just make sure you do it right the first
time
'Cause nothin's worse than a Suicide
Chump

Now maybe you're scared of jumpin'
'N poison makes you sick
'N you want a little attention
'N you need it pretty quick
Don't wanna mess your face up
Or we won't know if it's you
Aw there's just so much to worry about
Now what you gonna do?

Go head on 'n get it over with then
Go head on 'n get it over with then
Go head on 'n get it over with then
Go head on 'n get it over with then

You're on the bridge;
Scared to leap,
But a girl walks over
To take a peep...
She says: *"DON'T DO IT!"*
But wouldn't you know...
The girl got a head
Like a buffalo
With a little red hair
All over the top
An' her breath would make the
Traffic stop
She says *"I LOVE YOU...*
*BUT FIRST, LET'S EAT!"*
And all you can say as you run down the
street

1-2-3 Is this thing working?
12:47 PM on 09/03/2007
So, he has a new film coming out in which he plays a suicide attempt failure... could this be a new form of marketing?

Anyway, hope he recovers fully and gets back to work. He is an original and we need him in films.

I wonder if he can have those pesky scars on his wrists turned into something more hip, say...

*** a tribal tattoo?
*** something along the lines of Angelina?

Seriously, WTF is wrong with him? How could he be that depressed. I mean, we all know what a whore Kate Hudson is, but still...!

P.S. I am writing this because I am concerned.

What do our young people have to emulate as role models?

If they follow the top celebrities in the gossip rags' example, they would all go out and:

(1) Dress Like Whores!
(2) Do Crack 24/7! Then Drive and Go Shopping!
(3) While Driving, ignore directional signs!
(4) Act Like Whores! Sleep with the guy's friend! (Note to Kate: bitch!)
(5) Have Babies and then go out and PARTY!
(6) Fuck Car Seats! Put kids on lap!
(7) Don't Show Up for Work!
(8) Shave Your Head! Just Don't Get Fat!
(9) Do NOT Eat Anything! Wear a Bikini and it should fall off the bone!
(10) Make a Sex Tape! Make it as Nasty as Possible!
