BAGHDAD -- The U.S. military buildup that was supposed to calm Baghdad and other trouble spots has failed to usher in national reconciliation, as the capital's neighborhoods rupture even further along sectarian lines, violence shifts elsewhere and Iraq's government remains mired in political infighting.

In the coming days, U.S. military and government leaders will offer Congress their assessment of the 6-month-old plan's results. But a review of statistics on death and displacement, political developments and the impressions of Iraqis who are living under the heightened military presence reaches a dispiriting conclusion.

AMMAN, Jordan - Iraq's oil minister said Tuesday that crude oil began to flow from his country's northern oil-rich Kirkuk to a Turkish export terminal last week " for the first time since Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003.

"We're pumping between 300,000 to 400,000 barrels a day of Kirkuk crude to the Turkish export terminal of Ceyhan," Hussain al-Shahristani told Dow Jones Newswires in a telephone interview from Baghdad.

That's funny. Even Perky Katie says things are improving.

Well, the way I see it is, the war's still about the oil, and as long as that's the case, and the Rich People haven't managed to install their oil wells to their liking, then whatever you may call it there will continue. They can surge hither and yon, in and out, up and down, back and forth, and expend billions of yet-unprinted dollars, and we still won't have gone a single step closer to not needing the stupid oil that all of this fighting is really about anyway. Somewhere, there's some fat bastard in a business suit having a good laugh...

If the LA Times had said the surge was working, that would be news.

The LA Times saying "the surge has failed" is like Tony Snow saying "I like the President."

Both statements remind us of the opinions held by either party, but they don't get us any closer to the truth.

lindamart60, attention - no matter how many times you repeat the SAME LIE over and over, again "(and the liberals here on Arianna Huffington's military hating website)" you can't make it a fact. Your claim is a LIE.

And in fact, repeating the very same false statement endlessly is a sign of insanity or at least that you are a paid troll for some foundation or the RNC.

You are disruptive and a diversion and no better than "some liberal poster" whom you complain.

He has been kicked yet again. Will you meet the very same fate?

You do your cause a great disservice.

We know that will automatically be their opinion, but it doesn't get us any closer to the truth.

bertcroc2--If putting a Taco Bell In Baghdad was worth the expenditure of $500,000,000,000 and the killing and maiming of tens of thousands in a phony senseless war destroying a country and sending millions of its citizens scurrying out of the country, then you, neocon fascist, are in need of pyschiatric help. I was was aware that your war was primarily for profit as evidences by Halliburton's greedy income from it, but was unaware of Taco Bell's interest in war profiteering. Thank for the update on the definition of "winning", moron.

How could the LA Times report this when Bush hasn't even decided for certain what the reality should be yet?

Obviously this misguided report failed to wait for the facts to be dictated by the Administration so it should be ignored.

After four years an 409 Billion US dollars and 4,000+ American lives the Iraqis have met 38% of their benchmarks.

Think it is waaay past time to pull the plug on this fiasco.

GWB just wants to run out the clock and then claim he didn't fail.

With Bush, somebody else is always footing the tab. Troops, taxpayers, whoever. He suffers no consequences and wouldn't even recognize failure if it bit him in the ass.

Yes, its victory as the Brits leave having turned over the entire south to Iran almost 2 years ago. Wonder what port we are going to exit from now?

Bush went to a place where we now pay those who were killing us $300 per month not to, plus arms and meals, in an area that is segragated and has no Shites left. We are now equiping a Sunni Militia which openly states they are against the Iraqi government we support.. if thats victory, defeat cant be much worse or any different!

Regards

That means the coalition of the willing is down to us and 550 Aussies ( who will be leaving with the new prime Minister is in office).

This phony war has no legitimacy and the neocon fascists chickenhawks who with great alacrity preach war, but do not wish to serve are out in full force. The dishonorable politicians like Bush and Cheney and their enablers in and out of congress are always willing to send soldiers to die as long as they can sit back and reap the profits of war. Iraq did not attack the US and had no intention to do so. The man responsible for 9/11 is still alive and well and making TV appearances from time to time. The "surge" has been successful in creating "countersurges" in various parts of Iraq and will go down in history as the "Mother of all Guerilla Warfare" in a modern country.
