Kathy Griffin On Emmy Win: "Suck It, Jesus, This Award Is My God Now"

The HBO movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" topped the winners list Saturday at the 58th annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards, taking home five statues including makeup, picture editing, sound mixing and editing and cinematography.

Other programs taking home awards in top categories included "Planet Earth" for best nonfiction series, Bravo's "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" for reality program and Nickelodeon's "Nick News With Linda Ellerbee: Private Worlds: Kids and Autism" for children's program.

Griffin drew laughs in her acceptance speech, saying: "Can you believe this shit? Hell has frozen over. Suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now."

I am honestly amazed at some of the comments here. And it makes me very sad that we live in such a messed up world that something so low, vulgar, completely classless and utterly insulting is high-fived by her supporters. Nice.

It makes me sad about people in general, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Jesus was hated and spat upon and crucified back then... and that still is happening to this day.

The only thing I can say in her defense is that I truly think she has no idea what she actually did. If she had even an inkling as to what she did, she would to ashamed to even show her face and she would be begging God for forgiveness.

Jesus was so right when he said, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Why do cowards like Kathy Griffin, who would never blaspheme Allah, feel it's safe to blaspheme Jesus Christ? Is it the knife pounded into the chest or the serrated blade against her neck separating her head fom her torso that keeps her respectful?

Because Christianity is the dominant cultural reference point and that's where humor lies in riffing on cultural reference points that everyone will get. Specifically in this case the way in which people receiving awards will thank Jesus for it despite the fact that they aren’t terribly good examples of Christians in the first place.

The point of the joke wasn't really to barrack against Christianity per se but rather to prick the pomposity that is displayed by people receiving awards.

But of course you know that and are simply being a prick, plus I think you might want to talk to somebody about your violent misogynistic fantasies.

Oh and for the record, Jesus and Allah can take turns sucking it.

She is so deserving of that Emmy! Now, they can bill her as "Emmy Winner Kathy Griffin!" Her show gets better and more real every year. Having lost my Daddy, I could relate to her pain and the desire to honor him. Those episodes were hard for me to watch, but quite real and moving.
Congratulations to Kathy...you are moving on up on that list!
