The Supreme Court ordered Time magazine to pay $106 million in damages for defaming former Indonesian dictator Suharto by alleging his family amassed billions of dollars during his 32-year rule, officials said Monday.

The May 1999 cover story in the magazine's Asian edition said much of the money had been transferred from Switzerland to Austria before Suharto stepped down amid riots and pro-democracy protests in 1998.

Suharto, who said the article defamed him and the state, filed a lawsuit with the Central District Jakarta and later the Jakarta High Court, both of which ruled in Time's favor.

We have all been harmed in a multitude of ways by the media. Should we proceed with a class action suit against them as well?

Welcome to Indonesia!
and
Switzerland!

Was the claimed defamation about the amount of the graft? Can't be because he claimed no corruption - Have you been to Indonesia?

And the Suharto Foundation plans to use the money to support the Human Rights Campaign, Amnesty International, and Doctors Without Borders. Ya gotta love a philanthropist like this.

I'm waiting for Bush to order those wimps in congress to pass a bill to force Time magazine to pay the dictator. This is for two reasons. One because Bush thinks he is a dictator and two, because Time magazine has close ties to msnbc tv.

Good luck collecting your judgment Suharto. I can't think of a single reason that Time Inc. would actually pay this.

Surprise! Surprise!. The Indesian Supreme Court ruled in favor of the disposed leader of the country, what a shocker. Expecially since one of his generals is sitting on the court. He, Suharto, lost in two lower court cases may have one more judicial hurdle before it is over. I wonder if there any more Suharto supporters or family members on this next level of jurisprudance. Not only did he steal Billion from his treasury he instigated riots against the Chinese minority in Indonesia at that time that claimed thousands of lives. Another didctator that the US supported beause he was "anticommunist". Simply telling the truth about these people is "defamation" in their eyes.

Seems like the court wasn't dealing with Suharto's reputation in actual reality. Either that or it's likely that some fraction of the billions that Suharto stole from Indonesia has inured to their benefit in exchange for such a ruling -- but Time had better not report THAT, either.

Of course they did. He was a dictator, and tyrants get money when they ask for it these days.

There are many others they've defamed, who will never see one red cent.
