Britney Spears has no one to blame but herself for her disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. The lip-synching pop tart showed up for her big comeback late, unprepared and with a drink in her hand.

On Saturday, the day before the VMAs, Spears was scheduled to arrive at rehearsal at around 1 p.m. Our spy said, "She didn't even get to Las Vegas until 4:30 p.m. It was ridiculous . . . The production people at MTV were freaking out . . . Nobody can tell Britney what to do anymore. No one can control her. She is a mess."

To make matters worse, when she arrived in Vegas, Spears didn't go straight to rehearsals. "She went to her hotel room and ordered a bunch of food and some frozen margaritas," the spy said. "She came down, like, an hour later with a frozen margarita in her hand."

To the young girls I know (middle schoolers, 12-13 or younger), Britney Spears is about as relevant as Marie Osmond or Olivia Newton-John, anyway. They are all into Hannah Montana, Hilary Duff, and others whose names I don't even know. I see one of Brit's problems (one out of many) as being that "her" audience is getting more mature and her act is not. Unlike, say, her former Mouseketeers comrade Christina Aguilera, who appears to be about ten times more intelligent than Spears and who is always trying to do something interesting and new with her music and her visual approach, whether you like it or not.

Did anyone else besides me note a certain arrogance to her during the performance? I got the impression she felt it was a huge honor we were getting to see her perform again, so all she really needed to do was phone it in.

Now reading the story about her showing up over 3 hrs late to rehearsal - do you know how many people sat around waiting? How can this be anything but pure arrogance?

Her performance reminded of the Simpsons episode where Bart is a burnt-out male stripper
with the cap guns. Ha Ha hilarious.

I think she's playing the game. She knows she can't get out, but since she had her self-awareness moment (shaving head, getting tat), she knows she has to play. She has "made the deal with the devil"; now she just has to ride it out.

Wasted talent. What a crying shame. I feel so sad for her. It wasnt that long time ago, her pictures were posted in our college dorms.

We listen to her music all the time - after exams, break from class and long hours in the library. We all sang with her and gigled our hearts out lip synced and danced widly to her music.

My roommate was pre-law and I was pre-med. Except for her music, we didnt have anything in common, except sharing her music. We became good friends because of her, and die hard fans of this super talented girl-woman.

She has became a tabloid target, and criticism admitedly are appropriate. Her talents and achievements are overshadowed.

Older and wiser now, a full pledge doctor, and my friend, a lawyer, but we still share her music.

We missed her terribly.

Thank you for your interesting comment. A side note: just in case you ever use the phrase again, it is "full-fledged doctor," not "full pledge doctor."

I suspect that English was not your first language. "Fledged" is a strange old adjective word referring to a bird having its feathers. (It stems from the French word "fleche" for feather, and the English surname "Fletcher" originally meant someone whose job was to put the feathers on arrows.) "Full-fledged" means that the bird has its complete adult set of feathers, or metaphorically that somebody is a complete finished product, like a full-fledged police officer or airplane pilot. By contrast, a "fledgling" is either a baby bird or someone taking his or her very first steps in a profession--a fledgling nurse, a fledgling teacher, etc.

I retract my previous statement about her looking good. I finally saw video of it, she is , well, plump, drunk, and a horrible hair weave. She needs some real help. I hope she gets it.

It looks like Britney has probably been diagnosed with some form of mental illness and is on medication. That would explain her bizarre behavior of the past several months and her latest stage performance where so many people noted that 'she was there, but not really there.' MTV expolited her. They just asked her to open for them because they knew so many people would tune in to see that. I don't think anyone is looking out for her and unfortunately she can't look out for herself.

We need to just leave the girl alone.

My husband and I were just discussing how when Britney & Christina first came out - we agreed Christina had more staying power talent.
Britney only has her young fans and their parents have had probably neough of her antics. We refused to buy our daughter Michael Jackson CD's as soon as there was hints of his pedophilia. And we explained why - to help her build her own ability to tell right from Hype.
Time to find another Bubble gum idol.

Hanna Montana seems to have stepped into that iconic role.

Celebrity worshiping is rooted in adolescent and pre-adolescent years. Later on, many shed their worshiping, practically all shed their idols but find new ones well into adulthood.

I seriously don't know what these non stories on Huffpo mean.

Many Americans must lead lives so boring, otherwise why would they be interested in pseudo celebrities crap ? I don't understand HuffPo's policies, on one side they want us to take the political stories seriously, on the other side these "entertainment stories" are worse than most of the real tabloid trash. Just curious.

Dear CC,

I've been to Germany. I like Germany, and I understand the language well enough to read the newspapers.

Every German newspaper I am familiar with has a news section, a sports section, an entertainment section and so on. (Speaking of which, why isn't there a sports section on HuffPo? The women got a "Living Now" section?) I remember being in Frankfurt a.M. during World Cup 2004, and one day one of the main newspapers in Frankfurt (not the FAZ, admittedly), had a front-page article about how all the prostitutes in the brothels of Frankfurt were bored and not making any money, because so few of the visiting football fans they had expected to see had enough money or energy left (after watching games and drinking lots of beer with their friends) to pay for some sex. That was not a story of Weltbedeutung (global importance.) It was a funny story about sex.

In German newspapers and magazines, I also constantly saw articles about German and foreign celebrities, actors, and entertainers.

I never understand why every single day, someone complains about the "light" stories on HuffPost. Not many people want to be serious all of the time. A guy like Rush Limbaugh (ultra-right radio talk-show star with millions of listeners) wouldn't have gotten anywhere if he didn't know how to be funny, and to mix up his "serious" commentary with features designed to amuse his audience--unfortunately.

This is an Internet newspaper. Potentially it could be thousands of "pages" long, I suppose. Unlike a paper newspaper, space devoted to light-news or entertainment subjects takes no space away from the hard-news subjects. So if you don't want to read a gossipy article about Britney or whatever, and be momentarily amused by it, DON'T READ THE DAMNED ARTICLE. But don't act like some Puritan, or some Communist Party activist, who is irritated that 100% of the people are not thinking 100% about the struggle for 100% of the time.

Thank you for your kind words. Probably you are right. I admit we have the same stories about the same people, from Tom Cruise to Brad Pitt. And you are right in the sense that nobody has to read or commment on the stuff if he/she doesn't feel like it.

If the press treated Bush the way they do Britney, he would have resigned in tears by now. To me this is the sad part about all this.

INFOTAINMENT. Infotainment is by design used in America by the Corporate Media to sidetrack and distract the American Public from the more serious issues of our time. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Nicole Ritchie and other Americans of INSIGNIFICANCE will hog the headlines so that most Americans will never think about the decline of freedom and prosperity in America, the growing inequality between the classes and the growing power of the state over the individual.

Infotaiment is used to make money.

Politicians who like to see the limelight changed from them and real issues like infotainment and use it as a cover.

britney spears banked on her ability to be in outstanding physical shape and have kick-ass dance moves. has anyone here seen her previous performances on youtube? it seems not. but she has more stage presence and moves than paris, nicole, hilary, lindsey, jessica, and ashlee combined. perhaps that's not enough talent for the many overacheivers on this blog, but for the rest of america and the world, it was more than adequate, being that she was a huge star. she doesn't have a booming voice like christina or mariah, but she would not by anyone's standards be called a horrible singer. madonna certainly is no celine dion, but she's made an entire career based on the same thing: dance and pop music. it's really not brain surgery. she was a young, naive girl who got pushed (and pushed herself) into the spotlight, churned out a bunch of catchy pop songs and guess what? she crashed and burned big time! no real surprise there. and the whole thing is just sad. i felt uncomfortable and awkward FOR her as she yawned her way around that stage, especially having seen her previous performances--it's almost like they are completely different people. i don't care to ridicule, i just feel sorry for her. perhaps this was a wake up call to get herself together? but for many of you to call her "talentless" (among other things) is pretty arrogant. especially in the age where tartlets like paris and nicole have made an entire career and are celebrated for being rich, spoiled, who do NOTHING, and have a combined IQ that falls just below that of your average petco-raised goldfish. come on now! she definitely did not belong on that stage on sunday night and obviously needs to get some real help with her life, but give the girl a break!

Spears has some talent, there is no doubt about that. IMO, most comments on her and others in the same categories are hyperbolies. When someone else says "talentless", they usually mean less talented than credited, hyped or reputed. Few are snide enough to truly mean talentless and they are exceptions.

A more accurate assessment of Spears is that she is unprofessional. That is hard to dispute.

In the old days before voice enhancement technology, performers had to do three things; practice, practice, practice. No matter how much talent or reputation a performer has, there is no credible substitution for practice. Performers who relied on substances to keep them awake and alert enough eventually paid the price through repeated failing performances, a downwards spiraling career or more tragically, death. Janis Joplin is one notable and sad example.

A double edge sword contemporary celebrities face is the wonders of high technology that makes singers sound like Grammy deserving divas but when that technology fails or is replaced by a standard microphone and amplifier, they must use their actual voice and not lip sync. The hi tech delivers a good commercial sound to an audience and spoils celebrities by not making them work hard enough to further enhance their talents. Incidents happened to Madonna, Millie Vanilla, the Simpson sisters and others.

Spears is a victim of her unprofessionalism, immaturity, addictions, and over estimated self worth. The hi tech spoiled her, gave her a false sense of security and she probably thought she could wing it with a few mediocre moves. Her immaturity and unprofessionalism precluded her from realizing the need and value in showing up on time and practicing.

Most criticisms are well deserved even though some critics' words are off. The way she conducts her personal life in the public's eyes earned her a blanket of negative perception that will be hard to eliminate.

"paris, nicole, hilary, lindsey, jessica, and ashlee combined"

First of all find the shift key. Secondly, Paris and Nicole are not singer/dancers or performers at all really. They are some new breed of celeb somehthing or other. Hilary, Lindsey, Jessica and Ashlee are Brit's peers. NONE OF THEM HAVE TALENT, they are products.

Finally, everyone SHOULD leave Brit to her sorrows. Give her a large bottle of Tequilla, something cheap, prop her up in a corner and leave her be. Maybe keep the duct tape handi, just in case the Ceurvo makes her feel like singing.
