Body Shop founder Anita Roddick, who used her international cosmetics chain to promote eco-friendly practices long before they were widely fashionable, died after suffering a brain hemorrhage. She was 64.

Anita was a great crusader. Her joy and passion was to defend the down trodden whoever or wherever possible. I think its easy for some to dismiss her because of her corporate roots. But in reality she was extremely effective because of that position. I had the honor of working with Anita and witnessing her energy first hand. She loved action, creativity, to inspire and to be inspired. We'll miss Anita but she won't be forgotten. Anita touched many lives and her influence will be felt in a positive way for generations to come.

Anita's efforts:
* against Shell Oil were unprecedented for a corporation.
* in support of the Ogoni of Nigeria were absolutely life saving (whenever possible)
* Romanian orphans
* Anti-vivisection
* Against Chevron
* Domestic Violence
* WTO
* Eliminating Pthalates
* Etc.

I second everything you have written cotterspin . . . I wish I had known her . . .
I wandered into the Body Shop yesterday to pay my respects because I felt as though I had to say Thank you to a truly great woman -- yes, she will be sorely missed.
